In 2017 we launched the International Business Council Munich (IBCM), a business networking forum that brings together members of 16 international business organizations active in the Munich area. The IBCM’s mission: “To combine the strengths of the participating IBCM groups in joining for business events of mutual interest and in addressing topics of common interest. An umbrella organization, the IBCM provides an organizational interface, supports the sharing of ideas, facilitates making new business contacts, and stimulates learning.”

We held our 2nd 2018 IBCM Event at the Marriott Hotel in north Schwabing on Wednesday, 5th December. The event featured Keynote Speaker Prof. Dr. Gabriel Felbermayr, one of Germany’s very top global trade experts, who addressed the present Transatlantic Trade situation. Given the recent heated rounds of political discussions on trade and looming tariff aspects, this was certainly a highly informative and insight-full discussion with a following session of Q&A...

Prof. Gabriel Felbermayr, PhD, was born in Steyr, Austria. After his studies in Economics and Trade at the University of Linz, he went to Florence, Italy, for his doctoral studies and to Tübingen, Germany, for his habilitation. Since 2011, he holds both a position as Director International Economics at the Ifo Institute and as Professor of Economics, esp. International Economics, at the Department of Economics of Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich.

He has recently been named as the future (March 2019) President, Kiel Institute for the World Economy (ifW -

Before joining the Ifo Institute, he was Professor at the University of Hohenheim (near Stuttgart, Germany (2009-2011)), Assistant Professor at the University of Tübingen, Germany (2005-2009), and worked as an Associate Consultant for McKinsey & Co. in Vienna, Austria (2004-2005), and was an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Economics at Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Austria.

Gabriel Felbermayr has various roles and positions. The most important are: Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy, Associate Editor European Economic Review; Associate Editor, International Review of Economics and Finance; Scientific Advisory Board, Institute for Applied Economic Research, Tübingen; External Research Fellow, Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalization and Economic Policy (GEP), University of Nottingham. For his research, Felbermayr was awarded several prizes. His research deals with international trade agreements, trade and labor market outcomes, trade and environment. For further details and publications, see

In addition to Prof Dr Felbermayr’s address, each IBCM organization provided a short (1-minute) summary on its group’s key features and upcoming events, followed by a brief Q&A session.

Afterwards we enjoyed a buffet dinner with networking in the foyer. In parallel members of each organization were available in Salon C/D for informal discussions on their respective groups.
