Cities are turning from governed environments to an interactive ecosystem of like-minded citizens engaging with a community governance and user setting. The catalyst for this is a proliferation of real time user services delivered through web interfaces, as well as the increasing consumerization of IT technology embedded in the citizenís daily lives. Public sector agencies are developing smart city concepts in order to harness new engagement models using application and data portals, mobile services as well as the citizen participatory platforms. Improving the operations of city experiences such as traffic management, energy and resource efficiency as well as public works and lighting reduces the complexity of urban management while reducing operational cost. This presentation will outline the different strategic decisions cities need to make to build smart city strategies and the benefits to citizens and businesses. It will also provide an overview of disruption in terms of technology but also user engagement and discusses the value of data exchange.
